AI Provider & AI-Generated MCQ Practice
3 min read
AI features in Academy & Exam OS are optional. Without a configured provider the application works normally, and the AI pages simply say that no provider is configured.
AI uses your own account with OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude. The provider bills your account directly; its charges are separate from Academy & Exam OS.
What uses AI #
- AI Question Drafts (staff): drafts of questions and explanations that staff review before anything is saved to the question bank.
- AI Generated MCQ Practice (students): personal practice sets for a chosen subject and chapter.
The provider settings #
The AI Provider page (under System / Integrations, address /staff/settings/ai) has these settings:
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Provider | OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude |
| Model | The model name as published by the provider |
| API key | Your own key from the provider’s console. It is stored encrypted and never shown again. |
| Monthly usage limit | Tokens per month for all staff together (default 100,000). Requests stop when the limit is reached and resume the next month. |
| Request timeout | Seconds to wait for the provider (5–120, default 30) |
Step 1: Configure the provider #
Prerequisites: an owner or administrator account, an API key from your provider’s console, and outbound HTTPS from your server (the installer’s requirements page shows whether outbound TLS works).
- Open System / Integrations → AI Provider.
- Choose the provider, enter the model name and your API key, and set the monthly usage limit and request timeout.
- Save the settings.
- Use the check action to confirm that the key works.
Expected result: the check succeeds and the page shows the usage of the current month.
Step 2: Generate staff question drafts #
Owners and administrators open Mock Tests → AI Question Drafts (/staff/ai) to generate drafts of questions and explanations. Review and edit each draft; only what you accept is saved to the question bank, as a draft question that still needs approval. See Question Bank.
Step 3: Set up AI practice for students #
AI practice is off by default.
- Open System / Integrations → AI Generated MCQ Practice (
/staff/ai-practice). - Enable the feature.
- Choose the eligible packages — students get practice through their package access.
- Set the per-student limits.
- Save.
What students get:
- practice sets of 10 or 25 questions for a chosen subject and chapter;
- scoring of +4 / −1, save and resume, answer review and a practice history;
- a notice, which they acknowledge before starting, that generated questions can contain mistakes.
Every generated item passes an output validator before students see it. AI practice is kept separate from formal Mock Test results and certificates.
Cost and privacy #
- The provider bills your own account. The monthly usage limit and the per-student practice limits are your controls on that spend.
- Only the prompts the application builds (chapter, difficulty, question type and small examples) are sent to the provider. Student personal data is never part of a prompt.
Note: In the public demo on the OsDot website, AI answers come from a fixed demonstration sample, not from a live provider. Your installation uses the provider you configure.
